Base Entrance Bridge

  • Design/Build contract with USACE-Mobile District
  • Required extensive coordination between the Federal Government, Railroad and Key infrastructure/utility providers

Design/Build project for a key Army installation in the Southeast to replace the existing main gate entrance road bridge.  The bridge spans three rail lines and connects the main entrance gate to the visitor’s center and secondary entrance gate.  The project included the design and construction of a quarter mile of new asphalt roadway (including milling and tie-ins), a new 191’-9” concrete bridge, an extension of the existing storm water culvert, the rerouting of a 6” ductile iron domestic water line, the rerouting of critical telecommunications, and the demolition of the existing 165’ concrete bridge.  The design had to comply with military, Norfolk Southern and DOT standards.  This required two separate design review processes, one for the USACE and one for Norfolk Southern, to run parallel with one another so that both designs were approved by the desired construction start date.  Once construction began, extensive construction phasing and traffic planning was required with the Government and railway to ensure that the traffic flow of vehicles and railways were maintained.
